Why Should Companies Let Employees Telecommute?

There are many reasons why companies such as Best Buy, Google and the Federal Government have converted embarrassed telecommuting. The company benefits of a full or partial telecommuting staff is becoming recognized and accepted by CEOs and Executives.

The number of Americans whose employer allow them to work remotely at least one day per month increased 63 percent, from 7.6 million in 2004 to 12.4 million in 2006, according to a recent report issued by WorldatWork.com. The financial benefits to companies in hiring to part time and work from home employees have kept this trend rising throughout the recession.

Several States in the US have initiated "telecommuting" initiatives to help curb congestion on their road and highways.  These initiatives have proven that having employees work from home and work part time does a lot more than reduce our carbon footprint.

The top incentives for companies to hire part time and work from home employees (as researched by Telecommute Connecticut) are:

Employee Retention
Many companies use telecommuting as a perk to attract and retain top talent.  40% of employees say that telecommuting options would affect their decisions to leave or remain at any given company.

Expand Recruiting Options
Home-based work gives organizations the ability to attract a wider range of workers, including the physically challenged, parents with young children, people with elder care responsibilities and members of dual-career families.

Telecommuting has proven to be a good recruitment and retention tool because it:

·         Attracts the best and brightest candidates to the hardest-to-fill jobs.
·         Increases the flexibility to staff during peak workloads.
·         Helps to retain key employees who otherwise might leave the organization.
·         Reduces the cost and time of recruiting and retraining replacements.
·         Helps employees achieve work-life balance and reduces their costs and stress.
·         Helps organizations gain access to workers anywhere in the world.
·         Reduces turnover during relocations; an employee who must move geographically due to a job change by another family member may still be available through telecommuting.
·         Allows some employees on maternity leave to continue doing some of their work, and requires less retraining when they return to work full time.
·         Attracts highly qualified retired workers; many of these may be available to work part time, but not if it means fighting traffic.
·         Attracts talented workers who may already be employed, but who are available to moonlight, as well as those who live in remote locations and rural areas.
·         Increases overall employee productivity.
·         Attracts, retains and accommodates disabled employees.

Reduced Overhead
Telecommuting enables employers to share work space and reduce the need for parking spaces and alleviates the need for office expansion as their workforce expands.
Part Time work alleviates money spent on benefits, tax contributions and other employee perks.

Reduced Absences
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, colds force American workers to miss 20 million workdays a year. The flu accounts for another 70 million missed workdays. Telecommuters continue to work at home with a cold or other minor ailments that may have kept them out of the office. Also, fewer sick employees at work reduces the spread of germs and illnesses around the office.

Business Continuity
Companies with telecommuters keep going in spite of the environment, weather or other disasters that may keep employees out of the office.

Increased Productivity
Research shows that there is a 20-30% increase in productivity when employees are able to work from home at least one day a week.  Telecommuters and their managers report that workers get more done when out of the office.

Can you think of other reasons companies would benefit from telecommuting????  Please let us know!
